PDA in Adults

Many adults with PDA reached adulthood without a diagnosis or with a misdiagnosis. Whether you’re newly identified or have lived with PDA your whole life, this hub is for you.

How PDA presents in adults

  • Chronic exhaustion from managing demand avoidance across work, relationships, and daily life
  • Employment instability despite high intelligence
  • Relationship difficulties driven by the demand dynamic
  • Difficulty with appointments, bureaucracy, and “official” systems
  • High rates of co-occurring anxiety, depression, PTSD, and eating disorders
  • Identity confusion, particularly for those diagnosed late in life

Getting a diagnosis as an adult

A PDA diagnosis typically sits within an ASD diagnosis — seek assessors familiar with the PDA profile specifically. The EDA-Q can be used for adult self-report. Comprehensive psychological assessment is the gold standard. Medicare rebates may partially cover costs under a Mental Health Care Plan.

Managing daily life with PDA

  • Radical acceptance — demand avoidance is neurological, not a character flaw.
  • Reduce demand load — deliberately simplify obligations and commitments.
  • Find low-demand work — self-employment, freelance, or high-autonomy roles.
  • Communication scripts — pre-prepared language for managing social demands.
  • Recovery rituals — predictable decompression time after high-demand periods.
  • Connect with community — peer understanding from others with PDA is uniquely validating.

Relationships & PDA

Romantic relationships, friendships, and family dynamics can all be profoundly affected by PDA. PDA-informed couples therapy and family therapy exists — ask us for referrals via our Support hub.

NDIS access for adults with PDA

Adults with PDA can access NDIS funding if their profile meets eligibility criteria. See our dedicated NDIS hub for full guidance.
